Plains of Pain v0.8.20 reworks production, adds Relic Traders

Plains of Pain's Major Update v0.8.20 reworks production, introduces Relic Traders, and adds a new playable survivor to the wasteland. There's also new gear, gathering items, farming visuals, and a live-sandbox gameplay trailer. You'll need a fresh world to see any of it: after updating, you must create a new game world, because existing worlds won't include the newly generated content.

Production rework and Grandshack

Production buildings now pull workers directly from the settlement population in the Grandshack, and different buildings require different worker counts — the Metal Production Shack needs 4 workers, while smaller production buildings can need 2. Population becomes a resource: more survivors means more workers and production potential, but also more food and water consumption over time. If the settlement can't sustain its people, the workforce stops operating properly. The Grandshack also gets a new UI and updated population management, with resource requirements rising as the population grows.

The new system automatically handles worker distribution and production priority: workers finish the active production queue, then redistribute to the next building ready to operate. The production rework is groundwork for the future Settlements 2.0 update.

Relic Traders, Sgt. Reg and new gear

Relic Traders are scattered randomly across the wasteland and cannot be located through maps — you have to discover them while exploring. They trade extremely rare relics for unique weapons, gear, special items, and other rare rewards. The first two are Professor Amos, a Dustborns Relic Trader, and Captain Graves, an OGD Relic Trader. More traders, relics, and rewards are planned, eventually connecting to quest lines and larger progression paths.

Sgt. Reg, an old army veteran, joins the playable roster. New gathering items include the Rusty Axe (also a melee weapon), Handsaw, and Wooden Log; choppable trees now work with the Rusty Axe. Melee additions are Pan with Nails and Can Hammer with Nails. Farming gets 3D growth models, so crops like tomatoes clearly show their current growth stage.

The "From Nothing to Power" gameplay trailer follows one possible run from nearly nothing through building, trading, producing, and traveling, leading to the wasteland's most dangerous threats. It was captured in live sandbox sessions with no staged encounters and original narration by Paul Green.

Other improvements and patch highlights

  • Added a new default world seed and the missing Difficulty Settings button when hosting multiplayer.
  • Radiation Outposts get camera noise and desaturation effects; Frank and Ron conversations are spaced further apart and quieter.
  • Maximum upgradeable speed increased for selected vehicles.
  • Abandoned Metal Sheet structures can be scavenged with the Stone Hammer; The Architect monologue updated; Wasteland map improved; Relics added to loot tables; more settlements and junkyards added; more World Generator improvements.
  • Wooden blueprints now use Wooden Logs; traders can have Prefix and Suffix IDs assigned directly to items; all production buildings reconfigured; repair option added for buildings with defined durability.
  • Biome sampling is improved, so locations only appear in valid biomes — Fat Mike Junkyard will no longer appear inside Deadwoods.

Next, the team says its first priority will be watching how v0.8.20 plays, gathering feedback, and making balance changes or fixes. A dev blog is planned for next week on Settlements 2.0, Outposts 2.0, and where those systems are heading.
