Valheim 1.0 is finally here with the Deep North and a Jotun invasion

Valheim has reached 1.0. The launch update opens the Deep North biome and sends players out to slow a Jotun invasion, with new traversal, combat, building, and inventory upgrade systems on top. If you have questions about mods or existing saves, the 1.0 FAQ has answers, and the launch trailer is live.

What the Deep North brings

  • Snow now lies thick enough that you’ll need to clear it before building, and frozen seas and ponds demand careful footing. A snow shovel and a grappling hook are among the new tools.
  • The Jotun have begun their invasion. New events include “The Jotun have found you” and “They emerge from below…”.
  • The outer edges of Valheim can hold alternate versions of earlier biomes. Mysterious idols found across the world can be taken to a hidden forge for a shot at further upgrades.
  • Haldor now stocks inventory upgrades, and achievements have joined the game.
  • New cinematics unlock as you progress.

Bosses, crafting, and building

1.0 brings a boss in Kall Fimbulbringer, plus creatures such as the tameable and rideable Moose, Moose Calves, Seals, Baby Seals, and Writhan. Enemy types include Barka, Elaking, the Eyeless One, Fallen Warrior, Gammeltroll, Hexen, Krigen, and multiple Pulp variants.

The crafting list is substantial: 40+ new weapons, four armour sets, two capes, two trinkets, new bombs, ammunition, shields, staves, and tools. New material types and plantables include Kale, Oats, Poteitr, and Timberwood, alongside new production buildings like the Frigid Kiln and Frost Foundry.

Builders get 80+ new pieces, including steep wall and roof variants, Scalewood walls, decorated timber poles and beams, multiple drawbridges, gates, thrones, tables, rugs, and lanterns. New dungeons and locations include Winding Tunnels, Mörkhalla, abandoned villages, a stave hall, ice ponds, memorial sites, and the Forge of Potential. The update also adds new music, events, runestones, and Munin dialogue.

Performance and quality-of-life fixes

The save system now splits world data across chunks to reduce serialization, improve performance, and better survive mid-write failures. A new Draw Distance setting lets you tune simulation distance for better performance or longer-range visuals, and world generation has been optimized to be much faster.

Elsewhere, capes use a new Magica Cloth system, player movement animations were overhauled, and all hair and beard styles are now available from the start. The Hammer and Serving Tray menus were rebuilt, and an optional build-piece author window can be enabled in settings. Ashlands enemy spawn rates were reduced, Mistlands and Ashlands gear got a durability boost, and all Mistlands weapons now clear mist. The Unity engine was upgraded, controller vibration support was added on supported platforms, and Ukrainian is now an officially supported language.

Valheim 1.0 is available now.
