BeamNG.drive v0.40 Adds Split-Screen, Occupants and Cherrier Percheron
BeamNG.drive v0.40 adds 64-player local split-screen, physical occupants, the Cherrier Percheron semi, new anti-aliasing/upscaling and native Windows on Arm builds.
Split-Screen, Occupants and Modes
Start split-screen from the Main Menu by adding participants and choosing Freeroam or a mode, or from the Pause Menu. Freeroam starts players together at a random location with map-suited vehicles, per-player colors and gearbox/clutch/throttle-assist settings; players can enter friends’ cars. Modes: Race (85+ Time Trial/AI Race layouts), Drag Race, Pursuit, Derby, Drift, Rock Crawling and Soccer, with per-mode settings.
Walking mode has a new character mesh. Occupants—including Bob—add 89 kg per seat, are fully JBeamed, affect handling and keep their colors; the occupant camera works from any seat.
Cherrier Percheron, Trailers and Mascot
The Cherrier Percheron is an early-2000s European cab-over semi and the most interactable vehicle yet, with interior/door/night lights, sunroof, storage lockers, front fascia pane and foldable side skirts. It is a fifth-wheel tractor or rigid with flatbed, insulated-box, concrete-mixer and fuel/foodstuffs tanker upfits. Cabs come in S, L and XL (S is a low-roof day cab; L/XL add a sleeper). Frames span 6.17–9.80 m with air/leaf suspension, 2–5 axles and 50+ chassis setups from 4x2 to 8x8. A 12.8L turbo I6 makes 310–500 hp, with a 12-speed manual or 7-speed automatic; horn and reverse beeper included.
FPU European Truck Trailers add semi/rigid flatbed and insulated-box upfits, two fuel/foodstuffs tanker sizes, modular axle layouts and Muhten Tag milk liveries. The 86 kg Tyrannos Dinosaur Mascot appears near Tyrannos fuel stations, has an optional 560 kg dig-in base, fits many pickups/truck beds as a load and floats. Other vehicle updates include police lightbar modes, parking-brake triggers, seat stiffness, refined drag/lift, lightbar intensity and license-plate retro-reflectivity.
Graphics, VR, Controls and Rally
Anti-aliasing/upscaling adds SMAA T2x, NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR 3 and FSR 4, Intel XeSS, a sharpness slider and PC multi-monitor upscaling. Stochastic screen-space reflections cover vehicles, glass and water, with Specular Occlusion and softer light-source shadows. Cluster shading, SSAO and shadows are faster/more stable, night ambient lighting is fixed, and bindless Vulkan/Direct3D 12 rendering cuts CPU overhead. Graphics/Display settings were redesigned with Resolution Scaling, SSR quality, merged Ambient Occlusion and simplified Dynamic Reflections/Mirrors presets. VR supports Direct3D 12 via OpenXR with rendering fixes.
Wheel presets added and gamepad trigger linearity rebalanced; occupants give rally cars more realistic weight distribution. Modders can build dynamic 3D countdown clocks with realistic, zoomed or plain-UI options. Default pacenotes move from Pro to Enthusiast for visual-note support and better mod-stage compatibility.
Maps, Missions and UI
West Coast, USA fixed terrain, sidewalk and building-collision issues. Italy raised building LOD distances and fixed road/traffic-sign LODs; other maps gained updated backdrops, infinite planes and removal of old invisible-wall limit folders. Duplicate assets were cleaned and foliage soft collision optimized.
First Drive replaces the Freeroam Tutorial, with first-launch language, units and UI-scale setup. Italian trucking missions use Percherons; Abseiling Fuel and Trailer Ferry are now Freeform Delivery missions, and TastiCola Driver is new. Objectives/stars were rebalanced across Drift, Delivery, Knockaway and Time-Trial missions.
The Main Menu uses tiles for Quick-Start, Freeroam, Split-Screen and More...; Extras was removed, moving Credits to the Main Menu, Stats to the Pause Menu and the rest to Options. Photo Mode adds temperature/wind controls, Level Default/Realtime day length, upscaler support and an Early Preview Overlay editor. Low Performance warnings appear below 25 FPS in Freeroam/Split-Screen and the Pause Menu, and the “show possibly broken mods” button was removed due to false positives.
Performance, Windows on Arm and Modding
Native Windows on Arm builds are available alongside emulated x64, improving mostly CPU-bound performance; the launcher supports Arm, but the native version excludes the Steam SDK and overlay. Optimizations cover mod mount/unmount speed, Vehicle Selector loading, Replay recording and AI/traffic, with a severe framerate-drop/crash bug fixed. DirectX 12 memory overhead and synchronization improved.
The World Editor adds Editor Render Settings; Groundmodel Debug adds contextual options, polygon separation, an alternative color theme, realtime coltri count and load/save fixes.
