DayZ Badlands code lock and rebuilding system get a dev recap

The DayZ team has published the first recap post for DayZ Badlands, the upcoming release set on the new Nasdara map. The recap format isn't just a summary: future installments will answer player questions, clarify details, and occasionally include new minor info.

Rebuilding System and code locks

The headline topic is Dev Blog 5: The Rebuilding System. This major new feature lets survivors rebuild and barricade select houses in Nasdara, and it's designed to be more forgiving than the existing base building mechanic. You can rebuild a three-story house for your whole squad, or just add doors and windows to a small storage house to create a stash. The base game's base building system will still work for creating compounds.

The "cherry on top" is the code lock, a popular community request. It ships with the update and will be available on all other maps as well. The post includes new footage of the code lock in practice.

PvP and environment design

Dev Blog 4 explained how PvP shaped the map: open spaces are more varied and less of a sniper haven, with more natural and man-made cover despite less vegetation. The team also covered urban combat design and how "Bazar" assets are created, with a video showing a character walking through a mid-sized bazar.

MP-18 and Luger

As a bonus, the MP-18 submachinegun appears in action for the first time. It fires 9×19mm rounds, takes a 32-round drum magazine, and the drum has an indicator that approximately shows how many bullets remain. Its companion piece, the Luger pistol, can freely swap those same magazines.

Everything shown is work in progress and subject to change. Dev Blog 6 (Week 79) arrives next week and will showcase dust particles and a firearm. You can wishlist DayZ Badlands on Steam.
