Silica's next update boosts late-game FPS by up to 50%

Silica's next update is targeting late-game performance, with optimization work that can deliver up to 50% more FPS on certain machines in heavy battles. It also changes the singleplayer save format, so existing saves won't be compatible once the update arrives—finish any ongoing campaigns before then.

Smarter AI commanders

The update upgrades AI commanders on both offense and defense. AI commanders can now:

  • Respond to incoming threats and defend resource points and Harvesters
  • Repair damaged units and structures, and retreat damaged repair units
  • Stage larger attacks, expand bases, and capture points of interest like bunkers
  • Use transport units to move infantry
  • Build multiple production structures

AI commanders also use dynamic unit presets and rankings, letting them pick more appropriate units depending on what they're facing.

Repair vehicles, turret control, and group movement

Both Centauri and Sol factions are getting a dedicated repair vehicle. These vehicles repair allied vehicles—and yes, you can shoot an allied vehicle to heal it.

Commanders also get more direct control over turrets: order turrets to attack specific targets, or select multiple turrets at once to coordinate fire.

Group movement is getting tighter too. Units sent somewhere together now stay together, move at the speed of the slowest unit, and wait for other group members.

Performance and quality of life

The late-game optimization pass targets scenarios where hundreds of units are active at once. More performance work is still planned.

The update also adds production hotkeys, plus commander votes that let players remove the current commander from their seat. A built-in feedback form is in development; until then, feedback can be shared through the Silica Discord.

Silica's smarter AI now uses transports and improves targeting

Silica's latest development blog, Devblog #04, details a major AI overhaul that makes computer-controlled armies significantly more tactical. The update is available now, bringing smarter transport usage, new protect and attack commands, improved target prioritization, vehicle navigation fixes, performance optimizations, and quality-of-life changes.

AI can board transports and escort units

The AI now intelligently boards transport vehicles to reinforce fronts or reposition troops, making large-scale engagements more dynamic. A new Protect command lets assigned units surround and follow a protected target, reforming positions after obstacles. Units also stop advancing once they're within firing range instead of walking into danger.

Smarter target selection and vehicle pathfinding

AI units now prioritize their assigned target and focus on the most dangerous enemy rather than constantly switching to the nearest threat. Vehicle navigation has been reworked to prevent AI from driving onto building sides, reducing stuck vehicles and bizarre routes.

Performance and quality-of-life improvements

Mipmap streaming has been added to reduce memory usage and improve performance on a wider range of hardware. Harvester issues—including resource depositing, vehicle flipping, and general collection reliability—have been fixed. FOV settings with sensible limits are now available for first-person mode.
