American Truck Simulator reveals South Dakota's Mount Rushmore

SCS Software has spotlighted Mount Rushmore in the upcoming South Dakota DLC for American Truck Simulator, a map expansion that can be wishlisted on Steam. The monument is the reason South Dakota is officially known as the “Mount Rushmore State” and is set among the Black Hills.

The monument and nearby Keystone

Mount Rushmore towers above the surrounding landscape with carved granite faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. Carved into the mountain between 1927 and 1941, the landmark attracts millions of visitors from around the world each year.

Nearby, the small town of Keystone serves as a popular gateway to the monument. It offers a charming downtown, unique Western-style character, and a depot for the historic 1880 Train — a steam-powered excursion railroad connecting Keystone and Hill City along an original late-1800s mining route.

Scenic drives through the Black Hills

US-16, also known as Mount Rushmore Road, connects Keystone with nearby communities and winds through the Black Hills, passing tunnels that frame Mount Rushmore in the distance. The scenic US-16A, or Iron Mountain Road, adds another memorable drive with winding curves, forested surroundings, and carefully designed bends.

The Black Hills contrast sharply with South Dakota's wide-open plains, offering dense forests, rugged rock formations, and curvy mountain roads. The region's motorcycle culture is also part of the atmosphere, with riders' bikes parked in some of the area's parking lots.

Mount Rushmore is just one of the highlights planned for the South Dakota DLC. You can also check the Black Hills blog post or add the expansion to your Steam wishlist.

American Truck Simulator's Atlas feature gets a Road Trip trailer

American Truck Simulator's upcoming Road Trip DLCs will bring a new exploration feature called Atlas, and SCS Software has released a video trailer showing it in action.

Atlas is built around discovery: players use Tourist Boards to find, visit, and learn about selected locations across the ATS world. Doing so uncovers Points of Interest, Viewpoints, and Photo Trophies that spotlight significant regional spots, with a special postcard reward for tracking them all down.

Atlas ownership requirements

Atlas will only be unlocked for players who own any Road Trip DLC: the Ford Car Pack or the RAM & Dodge Car Pack, both available on Steam. The feature is not limited to cars, so truck drivers can use it too.

More details are in the dedicated Atlas blog post, and the packs can be wishlisted on Steam: Ford Car Pack and RAM & Dodge Car Pack.

Road Trip's Atlas brings exploration to American Truck Simulator

SCS Software has unveiled Atlas, an exploration-focused gameplay feature coming to American Truck Simulator with Road Trip. Announced on August 7, Atlas will be available to anyone who owns either Road Trip DLC—the Ford Car Pack or the RAM & Dodge Car Pack—and it isn't limited to cars, so truckers can use it too.

How Atlas works

Atlas lives in the Navigation tab of the in-game desktop. It centers on Tourist Boards scattered across the map: pick one, and the GPS will route you to it. Arriving at the board reveals a set of exploration locations spread across the surrounding region.

Your objective is to visit every location tied to a Tourist Board. These fall into three categories: Viewpoints, Photo Trophies, and the new Points of Interest. A Point of Interest is marked as explored simply by driving through its designated area—no stopping or trigger required. If you revisit one through Atlas or the Gallery, you'll get a live camera feed of the location, and if your vehicle is parked there, it appears in the view.

Discovering a new location triggers an on-screen widget (which can be enabled or disabled in the widget settings), a short celebratory sound, and unlocks a brief description of the place. Unlocked cutscenes can be replayed anytime from the Atlas interface.

Tourist Boards and rewards

Completing every location on a Tourist Board marks that board as completed and rewards you with a postcard inspired by the region, which you can display on your vehicle's dashboard.

Where Tourist Boards are at launch

Tourist Boards start in California and in the Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and South Dakota DLCs, with more states to be added gradually.

You can add the Ford Car Pack and the RAM & Dodge Car Pack to your wishlist.

American Truck Simulator's British Columbia DLC reveals tunnels and snow sheds

Today's look at American Truck Simulator's upcoming British Columbia DLC focuses on the tunnels and snow sheds found along its highways, from mountain passes to Metro Vancouver.

Snow sheds on British Columbia's mountain highways

One of the most recognizable structures is the Great Bear Snow Shed on the famous Coquihalla Highway, a concrete landmark that protects drivers from avalanches and falling snow. Further east, several snow sheds line the Trans-Canada Highway (TC-1) through Glacier National Park, sheltering the road amid towering mountains and dense forests.

Tunnels on the Trans-Canada near Hope

The winding stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway near Hope includes a collection of tunnels carved through the mountainsides:

  • Yale Tunnel
  • Alexandra Tunnel
  • Hell's Gate Tunnel
  • Ferrabee Tunnel
  • China Bar Tunnel

Together, they form one of the most memorable highway stretches in the expansion, with dramatic canyon views between each passage.

Urban tunnels in Vancouver

In the Vancouver area, the Cassiar Tunnel carries traffic beneath a major city corridor, while another tunnel runs underneath the Fraser River to connect parts of Metro Vancouver.

The British Columbia DLC is still upcoming. Drivers eager to explore the province can add it to their Steam wishlist now.

American Truck Simulator previews South Dakota's Black Hills

A new look at American Truck Simulator's upcoming South Dakota DLC heads into the Black Hills, one of South Dakota's most iconic regions. The area spans thousands of square miles across western South Dakota, and this preview takes a closer look at the historic town of Deadwood and the scenic US-385 highway. You can add South Dakota to your Steam Wishlist now.

Deadwood

Founded in 1876 during the Black Hills Gold Rush, Deadwood became one of the American West's most famous frontier towns, known for legendary figures such as Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. The in-game recreation lets you drive along the historic Main Street, lined with charming storefronts, local attractions, and beautifully preserved architecture. Recognizable landmarks include the Town Hall, Museum, and historic Train Station.

US-385

One of South Dakota's most scenic highways, US-385 winds through the heart of the Black Hills past rolling hills, dense pine forests, towering igneous and metamorphic rock formations, and mountain vistas. If you're lucky, herds of bison may be spotted grazing alongside the road. The route also passes Pactola Lake — the largest reservoir in the Black Hills — where a visitor center overlooking the lake offers panoramic views and is surrounded by forested hills.

American Truck Simulator heads to Sioux Falls in South Dakota DLC

The latest American Truck Simulator preview takes us to Sioux Falls, the largest city in South Dakota and one of the highlights of the upcoming South Dakota DLC. The expansion is still work-in-progress, but this tour shows a city built around the Big Sioux River that grew from a small historic settlement into a bustling Midwest hub. The map team recreated many of the locations that make Sioux Falls instantly recognizable.

Falls Park and downtown landmarks

Drivers are greeted by the Welcome to Sioux Falls sign before reaching Falls Park, where the cascading falls on the Big Sioux River inspired the city's name and remain one of South Dakota's top attractions.

Downtown combines historic architecture with modern businesses. The Minnehaha County Courthouse, a quartzite building that has stood for well over a century, is joined by a bus station with a colorful mural celebrating the city's artistic culture and community spirit. Other landmarks include the Arc of Dreams sculpture, Fawick Park, and the USS South Dakota Battleship Memorial, featuring one of the WWII battleship's original main gun barrels alongside displays honoring the crew who served aboard.

Trucking work in Sioux Falls

The city offers a broad range of freight work. Truckers can deliver to a food processing plant, warehouse, construction site, rail supply depot, metalworks, wind turbine factory, recreation vehicle dealership, and truck dealership. They can also haul materials and equipment to and from the local quarry, a nod to the region's long-standing quarrying industry that helped shape many of Sioux Falls' historic buildings.

The South Dakota DLC for American Truck Simulator can be wishlisted on Steam now.

Improved material system rolls out in American Truck Simulator 1.60

The 1.60 update for American Truck Simulator introduces an improved material system for selected trucks, enhancing interior surfaces with more realistic reflections and lighting. SCS Software’s Daniel and Martin explained how the system works and what it means for performance—and for the upcoming Road Trip project.

How the system works

Instead of expensive ray tracing or global illumination, the system reuses existing mipmaps from reflective cube textures. Each mipmap level corresponds to a different reflection sharpness—from perfectly glossy chrome to rough, diffuse fabrics (where the cube face is just 2×2 pixels, acting as a color cast). This lets every interior material react to the truck’s surroundings, such as picking up a green tint when driving past trees. The update also rebalances contrast and lighting throughout the game to eliminate extremely dark areas.

Performance and gradual rollout

The system extends the current rendering pipeline, so performance impact is minimal. It was profiled continuously during development and adapts to medium or low settings by disabling real-time reflections while keeping materials realistic. However, each truck requires individual adjustments and testing across all weather and lighting conditions. As a result, only four trucks across ETS2 and ATS have the new system so far; the rest will be updated gradually.

Road Trip and car packs

The improved material system was developed for the upcoming Road Trip project, which adds passenger cars to American Truck Simulator. The system is designed from the start to work for both trucks and cars. Players can wishlist the Ford Car Pack and the RAM & Dodge Car Pack on Steam.

Nevada rework announced for American Truck Simulator

The next major overhaul for American Truck Simulator is the Nevada Rework Project, which will bring the entire Silver State up to the quality standards of the game’s latest content. Announced today, this complete rebuild covers all existing cities and road networks, preserving the state’s character while rebuilding many locations from the ground up.

Nevada was one of the original states in ATS, so the rework will also add locations and connections missing from the original version. A key example is the city of Fallon, east of Carson City, along with the missing sections of US-95 that run through Fallon from south to north. Throughout the state, brand-new custom depots will provide more diverse delivery destinations.

No release date has been shared yet, but the team says it will preview more as development continues.

Rapid City revealed in American Truck Simulator's South Dakota DLC

The upcoming South Dakota DLC for American Truck Simulator gets a detailed preview of Rapid City, the "Gateway to the Black Hills." Located near Mount Rushmore and Badlands National Park, the city offers a mix of natural scenery, historic landmarks, and multiple delivery depots.

A city shaped by history and nature

Rapid City marks its 150th anniversary this year, and the SCS team has recreated several signature buildings. Drivers will spot the historic downtown hotel dating back to the 1920s and a former fire station turned into a local winery. The large white "SMD" letters on the hillside above the city, a student tribute to South Dakota Mines, are visible from a distance. Other landmarks include the Memorial Park gateway entrance along Rapid Creek, city hall, administration buildings, a roadside windmill, and a downtown statue.

Depots ready for work

Players will find a variety of depots for job opportunities: a cement works, gas and chemical distribution facility, sawmill, warehouse, home store, waste management, and a custom‑made grain elevator depot.

The South Dakota DLC is available to wishlist on Steam. No release date has been announced yet.
